Free Web Filters

There are two excellent open source web filters available.

SquidGuard ( http://www.squidguard.org ) filters based on lists of URLs/Domain names. It is fast, it is simple, it is reliable.

Dan's Guardian ( http://www.dansguardian.org ) is a "content" filter, meaning that it analyzes the web pages themselves to determine whether the page should be blocked or not. This is slower and more complex, but it is more pro-active than squidGuard's url/domain based filtering.

K12LTSP ships with squidGuard, but it is not enabled by default. Click on the link below to learn how to active and/or configure squidGuard:

Adam Melancon has documented the steps the Vermillion Parish Library went through to get squidGuard working.
